Carol's Top Pick for December

I have seldom read a debut novel that has moved me more deeply than The Sisters. This story of Mabel and Bertie covers eighty years and three generations of women who fight the battlefields of their past, tangled links and secrets, not able to unlock what they have kept "caged", and not being able to reveal what they have shared during their divisions and reunions. The author's unique talent to tell a story about "her women” will take you on a journey with these poignant characters and open your heart to every emotion it can possibly hold. Heart-warming, heart-wrenching, and so beautifully told that you will find yourself walking each step in the soulful shadows of the sisters and the loved ones they try, each in their own way, to protect. This is a 5-star plus recommendation from me.

Debbie's Current Top Pick for December

Alternating between past and present, this story follows Victoria from foster home to nightmare foster home as she learns she is not worthy of a real family. She has only connected with one woman who began to teach her the Victorian language of flowers to convey emotions. She ages out of the system, is homeless, but talks her way into a job with a florist. Heartbreaking in many ways, this is a poignant story of a girl who will come into her own.

Cryogenically frozen and stored in the depths of the ship Godspeed, Amy, a volunteer of Project Ark Ship, is hurtling across space toward Centauri-Earth, a newly discovered planet. 50 years and 266 days before the projected landing Amy is brutally awoken and finds herself an outcast among the dystopian society left to populate the ship. Among them is Elder, the soon to be leader of all on board. When more people are found unplugged, drowned in their defrosted tombs, the two set out to find who the killer is and why they are doing it. But as mysteries lead to lies there are soon more questions than answers. Forget about genre. Part sci-fi, romance, and murder mystery, this book has it all. Ages 12 to adult.

Some mature content. Recommended for 16yrs and over.

Margaret's Current Top Pick for December

Inspired by a life long passion for the novels by Jane Austen, P.D. James has taken pen to paper to recreate the world of Pride and Prejudice. Masterfully written with excitement and suspense, this is a brilliantly crafted novel that will be embraced by Austen fans around the globe. All of the beloved characters are present: the Darcy family, the Bingley’s and of course Wickham. The spirit of Jane Austen stealthily creeps in and out of every page as does the mist at Pemberley.
